What the Kale, It’s Kale Season!

What the Kale, It’s Kale Season!

I’ve got the simple trick for you, and it’s a must-do if you are a kale lover like me. There are so many kinds of kale that sampling them all is challenging. Here in Germany, there are several different versions. I especially like the red stem kale; it is so vibrant and delicious.

The problem I run into is when it is laid out at the grocery store, with water spraying every 15 minutes, it looks amazing. But when I buy it in a sack, it is gray and dull-looking. Even the fresh batch I got this week at the outdoor market looked light gray. Well, bring that baby back to life! Easy Peezy.

  1. Wash and clean your kale the day you buy it, even if it is in a sack.
  2. Remove the vein stem and tear the leaves into pieces.
  3. Pat dry with a paper towel.
  4. Place in a sealed Tupperware or an airtight container and store it in the fridge.
  5. When you make your salad, take out the amount you want and put it in a colander. Quickly, pour boiling water over the kale in the colander. Spread it on a paper towel and pat dry. TA’DA! That kale is back to life, and the water helps soften it, making it less tough when combined with another type of lettuce.
