Healthy Recipes Free of Gluten, Dairy, and Soy for Serious Eaters

What is the difference between Probiotics and Prebiotics?

What is the difference between Probiotics and Prebiotics?

It wasn’t until last month that I had to really take a deeper look into the difference and come to grips with the fact that I had a severely leaky gut. I can hear all my friends now. WHAT, YOU?  I know, I know, I’ve been doing this for 7 years and avoided all gluten, soy, and dairy, but…little did I realize how an early case of Shigella (the first one in the USA to have it) at the age of 16 caused my entire colon and stomach lining to be depleted, plus years of antibiotics had destroyed my gut and eventually led to my autoimmune problems. Today, I am re-entering a new phase to heal the root cause of my chronic infection(s). Woo, what a trip! My cooking is taking a beating. The doctor has encouraged me to stop chilies and hot spices, and foods high in lectins, but I have to care for my gut now!

So I’ve been on super doses of probiotic and prebiotic foods and supplements. Of course, I got back to the research and found 3 incredible resources to help me on my path.

  1. Probiotics and Prebiotics: What’s the difference – This is short, simple, easy to read, and straightforward. For those who want to know!
  2. The Gut Geek – This is a great site for exploring more about the challenges of leaky gut. There are recipes, suggestions for supplements, and support. I’ve contacted them previously and always got an answer back quickly. Very friendly and helpful.
  3. Fix Your Gut – Now, this is for those who know about leaky gut and are serious. Here is a quote from the reviewer: “In his definitive work, John Brisson explores and explains everything you need to know about digestive health.” And yes, it is technical at times, but it’s very systematically laid out, and after you read it you say to yourself…”where was I during biology 101?” It is exceptional for those dealing with digestive issues and has specific steps, diet, and supplements for each case. Here is John Brisson’s website as well! Lots of great info.

Even if you think your gut is doing ok (like I did), it would be to your advantage to take a peek at these resources and check them out. I knew about leaky gut, but because I didn’t have the stomach challenges suggested by most doctors, it was never considered a root cause of my inflammation or tested until recently… so take a peek. At least you will be raising your self-care biology 101 grade!
